If
you find a book left lying somewhere in the town, it could be one of ours,
left there for anyone to read, to mark our production of 84 Charing Cross
Road!
Music and lyrics by Stephen
Sondheim; book by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelov.
Originally produced on Broadway
by Harold Prince.
This amateur production is presented by arrangement with JOSEPH
WEINBERGER LIMITED on behalf of MUSIC THEATRE INTERNATIONAL of NEW YORK.
It’s a spring day in Ancient
Rome and slave Pseudolus is desperate for his freedom from his master Hero.
Luckily for Pseudolus, Hero is head-over-heels in love with virgin Philia.
Pratfalls and slapstick abound, the crafty slave sets about devising an
elaborate scheme that will bring the two together. As the fast-paced action
flows in and out of three houses, we meet a bright array of comic characters,
from the dim-witted master and his battle-axe mistress to devious servants and
clumsy foot soldiers. Based on the 21 surviving comedies of Plautus, this
rollicking Roman musical farce is fit to burst with eunuchs, courtesans,
cross-dressing and mistaken identities!
