Electra
by Sophocles
In plumbing
the depths of the human soul, Greek dramatists masterfully created stories of
torment and disaster. None more so, perhaps, than Sophocles’ Electra.
The Royal Family of
Mycenae are suffering a terrible curse. Returning from twenty years fighting
the Trojan Wars, Agamemnon, King of Mycenae, is murdered by his wife
Clytemnestra and her lover. Distraught and filled with hatred, Agamemnon’s
daughter Electra refuses to submit to the new regime. Encouraged by the return
of her brother Orestes, she plans her bloody revenge. Told through the mind of
Electra, her memories and psyche embodied in the form of furies and Gods, this
classic Greek tragedy is as intensely emotional as it is powerful.
