The Breath of Life

Frances was the dutiful wife of Martin. Madeline was his not-so-dutiful mistress for 25 years. But now Martin has moved to America with a younger woman, so the two rivals meet at last.

At Madeline's home on the Isle of Wight, the women seek resolution and discuss their relationships with the elusive man they refuse to be defined by. Together for a single night, they explore the past and gradually realise that they must learn to feel the breath of life again.

Originally performed in the West End by Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, Hare's drama is skilfully and emotionally written.
