What's On > Autumn/Winter 2008/09 Season > 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff Adapted by James Roose-Evans
In
1949 New Yorker Helene Hanff started buying books by mail order from Marks
& Co, an unfashionable London bookshop situated at 84 Charing Cross Road.
At first her brash, bubbly enthusiasm was a sharp contrast to the stiff
formality of the replies she received from Frank Doel the bookseller. However, through their letters and
passion for books a friendship blossomed and then affection, leading to a
unique transatlantic relationship that spanned over 20 years. “A tender and moving portrait of a
couple drawn together by a love of literature.”
