What's On > 2007_2008_Season > The Master Builder by Henrik Ibsen An architect famous for his spires, but he has no head for heights - this is just one of the contradictions that make up Halvard Solness, the eponymous master builder in this psychological drama. Arrogant but consumed by guilt that this success is born from the failure of others; smug yet terrified a younger talent will usurp him; he is a man haunted by a tragedy which both destroyed his marriage and laid the way for his eventual success. But Solness sees a chance to be released from his inner demons with the arrival of an attractive young admirer of his work. Ibsen creates a tangle of contradictions from which emerges a captivating character study as Solness, one of the writer's most complex creations, heads towards his inevitable fall.
